Round Steel Column

Round steel column are a type of closed-section structural steel. They are manufactured either by rolling steel plates and welding the seam (creating welded pipes) or through a seamless process like hot-rolling or cold-drawing (creating seamless tubes).

Their specifications are typically given as outer diameter multiplied by wall thickness.

The advantages of Round steel columns are directly tied to their closed shape. They possess perfect isotropic properties, meaning their sectional characteristics are identical in every direction. This results in equal bending stiffness and compressive stability on all axes, with no distinction between a strong or weak axis.

These columns also offer exceptional torsional resistance, excellent fluid dynamic characteristics, high compressive strength, a clean aesthetic, and a relatively small surface area.

However, there are important limitations to consider. The most significant challenge is connection detailing. Creating joints-especially rigid connections for beams-is complex. It often requires costly internal diaphragms or external reinforcing rings, increasing both construction difficulty and expense. Furthermore, they are not economically efficient as pure bending members, generally costing more than hot-rolled H-section columns with equivalent load capacity.

Round steel columns are an excellent choice when a sculptural architectural aesthetic is desired or when the member is expected to withstand significant torsional loads.
