Intersecting Node Space Frame

Intersecting Node Space Frame

Details
Intersecting-node space frames, also known as "steel tube truss structures" or "tubular structures," are an advanced form of spatial grid structure. Intersecting nodes: These refer to the points in the structure where steel tube members intersect without the use of additional connecting plates or connectors (such as spherical nodes). Instead, the ends of the steel tubes are cut at specific spatial angles and shapes, and then directly welded together. At these nodes, the axes of the various members intersect at a single point, and the steel tubes appear to penetrate each other, hence the name "intersecting node." Space frame: This refers to a three-dimensional load-bearing system composed of numerous members connected by nodes according to certain geometric principles (such as triangular pyramids, quadrilateral pyramids, etc.).

Advantages of Intersecting Node Space Frame Structures:
1. Excellent Structural Performance:

Rational stress distribution: Steel pipe sections are isotropic, exhibiting excellent compressive, bending, and torsional resistance. The members primarily bear axial forces, allowing for full utilization of material strength.

High rigidity and stability: The three-dimensional spatial structure provides exceptional overall integrity and stability, enabling it to span large distances.

Lightweight: Under the same span and load conditions, it saves more steel than traditional steel structures (such as H-beams) (typically 20%-30%), thus reducing foundation costs.

2. Superior Architectural Aesthetics:

Free-form, lightweight, and transparent design: The slender steel pipe members and simple, uncluttered nodes easily allow for various complex and fluid curved shapes (such as saddle shapes, arches, and free-form surfaces), possessing a strong modern feel and visual impact. The structure itself is an integral part of the architectural expression.

3. Good Economic Efficiency:

Although node processing and welding require high precision, the elimination of numerous connection plates, bolts, and other accessories results in lower overall steel consumption, making it particularly cost-effective in large public buildings.

4. Relatively Convenient Construction:

Enables factory prefabrication: Both the members and intersecting lines are precisely cut in the factory, with on-site work primarily consisting of assembly and welding, resulting in faster construction and easier quality control.

Intersecting node space frame structures, due to their advantages of large span, lightweight and high strength, and design flexibility, are widely used in large public buildings with high demands on space and aesthetics:

1. Large sports venues: Gymnasiums, swimming pools, and stadium canopies (roofs) are typical applications. For example, the main steel structure of the National Stadium "Bird's Nest" is a complex box-section intersecting node truss.

2. Transportation hubs: Large roof structures of airport terminals and high-speed rail stations. These require creating open, column-free spaces.

3. Cultural and exhibition facilities: Theaters, concert halls, museums, and exhibition centers. Their design capabilities perfectly match architectural creativity.

4. Commercial and industrial buildings: Large commercial atriums, pedestrian street skylights, aircraft hangars, large warehouses, etc.

5. Landscape structures: City landmark sculptures, landscape towers, gates, etc., utilizing their expressive design capabilities.

6. Other special structures: Large coal conveying trestles, crane trusses, etc.
