Primary Covering Systems

Tensioned Membrane Covers

These systems use steel masts and a network of cables to tension the membrane fabric over the tank opening. They are ideally suited for rectangular or square tanks with spans typically between 10 and 30 meters. This design offers a straightforward structural solution while allowing for natural ventilation when configured appropriately.

Air-Supported Membrane Enclosures

Functioning as air-inflated or air-beam structures, these enclosures require no internal framework. Once pressurized, they form a large, continuous sealed space over the tank. This makes them a practical choice for very large circular or irregularly shaped tanks, with spans capable of exceeding 50 meters, and they offer significant advantages in installation speed.

Frame-Supported Membrane Covers

In this configuration, a rigid structural framework made of steel trusses or space frames provides the primary support. The membrane is then securely attached to this skeleton. Known for their durability and reliable sealing performance, these covers are well-suited for large-scale tanks or facilities that require regular internal access for inspection and maintenance.

Floating Membrane Covers

This design couples the membrane with buoyant elements, allowing the cover to float directly on the liquid surface without requiring peripheral support. Its simple installation process makes it particularly suitable for small tanks or those experiencing significant fluctuations in water level.

Key Design & Engineering Requirements

Sealing and Containment

Achieving a reliable seal is paramount. Membrane panels are joined using factory heat-welding techniques, and all penetration points and edges are sealed with durable gaskets. The perimeter is securely and continuously anchored to the tank wall to prevent the escape of odorous gases.

Corrosion Resistance

All system components must withstand harsh chemical environments. The membrane material itself must be resistant to a wide range of acids, alkalis, and organic compounds found in wastewater, often within a pH range of 2 to 12. Supporting components, such as hardware and attachments, are typically fabricated from corrosion-resistant materials like FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic) or steel with heavy-duty protective coatings.

Operational Safety and Maintenance

Designs must incorporate safe access features, including designated walkways, manholes, and emergency escape points. For large-span covers, structural integrity under wind and snow loads is a critical calculation. Furthermore, integrated ports for connecting vapor collection and extraction systems are essential for subsequent air treatment.

Site-Specific Adaptation

The covering system must be tailored to the specific tank geometry, water level variability, and required maintenance frequency. Provisions must be made to prevent premature membrane aging from constant contact with wastewater or chemical vapors. In high-temperature environments, membranes with corresponding thermal resistance are specified.

Material Selection & Installation

Standard Application

PVDF-coated polyester fabric is the most common choice, offering an excellent balance of corrosion resistance, UV stability, and durability, with a typical service life of 8 to 15 years in standard wastewater conditions.

High-Performance / Long-Term Application

For more aggressive chemical exposure or where an extended lifespan is desired, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coated fiberglass membrane is used. It provides superior chemical inertness, high-temperature resistance, and a service life expectancy of 15 to 25 years.

Specialized Scenarios

In cases involving highly concentrated acids or alkalis, specialized materials such as fluoro-rubber membranes may be employed for their exceptional resistance to strong corrosive agents.
