A coal yard enclosure membrane structure is an energy-efficient and environmentally protective system that combines tensile membrane materials with a supporting steel framework to fully enclose coal storage areas. This engineering solution is characterized by its large span capability, effective dust containment, and relative construction simplicity, directly addressing the critical issues of dust pollution and material loss in open coal stockpiles.

Primary Structural Systems
Air-Supported Membrane Structures
This system employs a single, continuously sealed membrane envelope. Internal air pressure, maintained by specialized fan units, provides the primary structural support, eliminating the need for internal columns. Capable of covering vast areas with spans ranging from 50 to 200 meters, it is ideally suited for large-scale coal yards exceeding 10,000 square meters. The erection process is highly efficient, with typical on-site construction periods of just 1 to 3 weeks.
Tensioned Membrane with Steel Framework
In this hybrid design, a rigid structural skeleton-composed of steel trusses or space frames-provides the primary support. The membrane is then tensioned over this framework. Well-suited for spans of 15 to 50 meters, this system offers high rigidity and resistance to deformation. It is a practical choice for medium-sized or irregularly shaped coal storage areas and can be readily designed to incorporate multiple access points for both personnel and heavy machinery.
Cable-Membrane (Cable-Net) Structures
This configuration utilizes a network of high-strength steel cables as the main load-bearing element, with the membrane serving as the enclosing surface. Renowned for its lightweight nature and material efficiency, it significantly reduces steel consumption. This makes it an economically attractive and structurally reliable option for large and medium-sized coal yards requiring clear spans of 30 to 80 meters.
Modular Composite Membrane Structures
Comprising a series of prefabricated standard units, this system allows for flexible expansion. The enclosure's total area can be easily increased by adding more modules, offering a scalable solution ideal for small to medium-sized yards or for facilities being developed in phases.
Key Design & Engineering Requirements
Environmental Sealing and Dust Control
Achieving a complete seal is fundamental. All membrane seams are factory-fabricated using thermal welding to ensure integrity. The design must incorporate specialized ports for integrated dust suppression systems, such as spray nozzles and dust extraction points. Furthermore, a controlled ventilation system is essential to actively manage and reduce internal dust concentrations, preventing explosive atmospheres.
Structural Load Capacity and Safety
The structure must be engineered to withstand all anticipated loads, including high winds, heavy snow accumulation, lateral pressure from the coal pile itself, and occasional maintenance loads. In regions prone to strong winds, the membrane's curvature is optimized to minimize wind uplift forces. For snowy climates, designs must include provisions for snow melt systems or incorporate steeper roof slopes (≥3%) to facilitate snow shedding and prevent dangerous accumulation. Corrosion resistance for all steel components and anti-static properties for the membrane are also critical safety considerations in this harsh environment.
